Trekking in Nepal can be as challenging as it is exciting. For that reason, you should be well-prepared in advance for your trip and should be knowledgeable about the rules and regulations, culture and customs, climate and environment, roads and transportation, accommodations and facilities, etc. of Nepal. Below are a few things to consider before coming to this exciting country.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE COMING TO NEPAL
- Visas for Nepal can be obtained at the airport upon arrival.
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the duration of your trip.
- Nepal has four seasons: Spring (March-May), Summer (June-August), Autumn (September-November), Winter (December-February).
- September to November during fall and March to May during spring are peak seasons.
- Monsoon season starts from early July and continues up to late August. It is not the best time to visit Nepal as heavy rainfall often causes floods and landslides.
- Be mindful of your surroundings while you are trekking. Don’t attract animals with strong-smelling food or leave trash behind.
- Nepal is divided into 3 main regions: Mountainous region, Hilly region, and Terai region.
- You can drive your foreign private vehicle for up to 1 month.
- Domestic flights are available in most parts of the country.
- Flight delays or cancellation and road blockages are frequent in this part of the world. You are expected to plan your trip accordingly.
- The biggest risks are usually from slips and falls, especially in wet conditions.
- Some basic facilities such as electricity, hot showers, A/C's might not be available in remote regions.
- ATMs can be found in most parts of Nepal. However, carrying some cash is recommended.
- The main currency of Nepal is Nepali Rupees (NRs.). US Dollars and Indian Rupees are also often acceptable.
- Tips are expected as the livelihood of the guides and porters mostly depends on tips.
