Bardiya, Nepal
You will begin your journey from Kathmandu by taking a short domestic flight to Nepalgunj, followed by a short drive to the park. Upon arrival at the park, you’ll check in to your lodge or resort and have time to unwind. The evening can be spent in quiet reflection or perhaps enjoying a traditional Nepali dinner while observing the surrounding wilderness.
Next day, you’ll venture into the heart of Bardia National Park. This national park covers over 968 square kilometers of diverse landscapes, including grasslands, riverine forests, and dense jungles. The park is renowned for its wildlife and offers some of Nepal’s best opportunities for spotting royal bengal tigers, asian elephants, one-horned rhinoceros, wild boar, deer, and various species of birds. You will take a long jungle walk with a guide during this day. As you hike, you will have ample opportunities to observe various flora and fauna of this region.
On the 3rd day, you will take a jeep safari through the park, led by local naturalists or rangers. As you drive through the dense forest or along the park’s many trails, you’ll have the chance to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. Birdwatching is another option.
In the afternoon, after a hearty lunch, you’ll head to the Karnali River for a relaxing boat ride, offering a different perspective of the park’s rich biodiversity. As you float along the river, you may spot crocodiles, water buffaloes, and if you are lucky, even a tiger, coming down to drink. There are also dolphins in Bardia. The boat ride provides excellent opportunities for close encounters with nature.
Your exploration of Bardia, however, is not just about contact with nature, it is also about gaining insight into the culture of the indigenous Tharu people, the primary inhabitants of the area. You’ll visit their villages and learn about their traditional way of life, farming methods, and customs, with opportunities to witness folk performances or traditional dances. In the evening, you’ll return to your lodge to relax after the day’s activities, perhaps enjoying a sundowner while watching the sunset over the plains.
On the final day, after an early breakfast, you’ll begin your journey back to Kathmandu, either by road or flight.
