Chitwan, Nepal
Chitwan is increasingly becoming as popular a tourist destination as Kathmandu and Pokhara for foreigners as well as the locals. Due to the rise in tourists, more and more restaurants and hotels are being built in and around this region, especially around Sauraha (which is close to the national park). These places are usually very crowded during the peak seasons (March-May; October-December) as other seasons are not considered ideal for visiting this area due to heavy rainfall or high temperature.
The main attraction of Chitwan is the Chitwan National Park. It is a huge national park and perhaps the best among the ones in Nepal. The dense forest that surrounds much of Chitwan National Park is home to hundreds of species of birds and animals. You truly feel connected to nature and wildlife while you are here. There’s a rawness to the place, a feeling that this is a land largely untamed. However, although the animals here roam freely, you always feel safe and protected. The national park is extremely well-managed. The wildlife of Chitwan is undoubtedly the most captivating element of the region. The sight of a one-horned rhinoceros emerging from the bush or a Bengal tiger slipping through the trees is unforgettable. Wildlife sightings in Chitwan are often about patience: waiting, listening, observing. The animals are not on display; they are part of the natural rhythm of the land. Elephants, crocodiles, and various species of birds move through this ecosystem as they always have, with a grace that feelsRapti River offer a chance to absorb the environment in a different way. As you glide quietly through the water, the world seems to narrow down to the riverbanks and the creatures who call it home. The tall grasses sway with the current, and the occasional movement of a crocodile or the flash of a bird’s wings feels like a reminder of just how much life exists in every corner of this ecosystem. If you do the jeep safari (highly recommended!), you will be accompanied by a guide. The guide is more than just a facilitator of sightings; they are a storyteller, weaving together the ecology and the history of the park into a narrative that feels deeply connected to the land. The alternative to jeep safari is elephant riding. You can also opt to hike through the jungle (with or without a guide). It is up to you to decide which option suits your preference.
Chitwan, however, isn't just about jungle safaris and animals; it is equally famous for its culture as well. The Tharu people, with their customs and traditions rooted in the cycles of nature, live and behave in a significantly different way than people in other regions of Nepal. They have their own distinct culture, food, and lifestyle. The village settlements are simple, grounded in the rhythms of agriculture and nature. Homes are often made from materials sourced locally—mud and bamboo—and the spaces are shaped by the environment, with many buildings tucked quietly along the riverbanks or hidden in the shade of the trees. The tour allows you to observe and absorb their culture through participation in cultural dance programs as well as through local markets and restaurant visits.
