Dhorpatan, Nepal
Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve, located in the remote hills of western Nepal, offers an exceptional blend of wildlife, natural beauty, and cultural heritage. Whether you’re interested in birdwatching, wildlife photography, or simply immersing yourself in the tranquility of the region, Dhorpatan provides a rare chance to experience Nepal’s wilderness in its purest form. Although this region is mostly known for hunting, the villages and scenery in and around this region are equally enchanting. This itinerary is designed to give you not just a simple hunting experience in Nepal but a more comprehensive experience and understanding of this region.
Your journey begins with a long drive to Beni and Darbang. Once you reach Darbang, your real trek begins. You will hike through popular villages like Lamsung, which serve as a gateway to explore the surrounding meadows, forests, and rugged ridges, until you arrive at Dhorpatan. Throughout your journey, you’ll also get the opportunity to experience the harmonious relationship between the local Gurung and Magar communities and the natural environment, gaining insight into the traditional conservation practices that help protect the reserve’s rich biodiversity.
Upon reaching Dhorpatan, on a clear day, you can see the panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri Range and the Annapurna massif. The reserve’s diverse terrain, ranging from rhododendron forests to alpine meadows, is home to a variety of wildlife including blue sheep, Himalayan tahr`, and rare bird species like the Himalayan monal and Kalij pheasant. For hunters, the reserve is one of the few places in Nepal where hunting is regulated and conducted sustainably, with blue sheep as one of the key targets under strict rules. However, even for non-hunters, the reserve offers numerous opportunities to observe wildlife, photograph pristine landscapes, and appreciate the area’s ecological balance. Trained local guides are available as well. The best times to visit Dhorpatan are during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. These periods offer the best weather and the most active wildlife. The monsoon season (July-August) is not considered ideal, as the grasses grow tall during this time, making it difficult to spot wildlife.
Note: A valid hunting permit, available through local authorities, is required if you plan to hunt.
