Dhulikhel, Nepal
Dhulikhel is quickly becoming one of the go-to destinations for anyone seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. Although located just at the outskirts of Kathmandu, Dhulikhel is a small town that offers a completely different experience: clean air, contact with nature, and majestic views of the mountains, along with all the modern amenities that you would expect to find in a well-developed town.
The views from Dhulikhel are the main highlight of this tour, but Dhulikhel offers more than just a picturesque panorama. From the hills above the town, the view stretches across valleys and fields to the far-off peaks of the Himalayas, framed by layers of greenery. The surrounding forests and hills are perfect for those who wish to escape into nature without the distraction of crowds or busy roads. The paths wind gently through oak and pine forests, offering occasional glimpses of small streams and waterfalls. There’s a peaceful solitude to these walks, a feeling of being apart from the world without being too far removed. The area is alive with birdsong, and if you’re lucky, you might catch sight of a deer or a monkey flitting between the trees. The hillsides are dotted with wildflowers, their bright colors offering contrast to the green backdrop of the forests. As you stand in the main square, the sound of everyday life fills the air—children’s laughter echoing from a distance, the low murmur of people chatting on street corners, and the occasional clink of metal pots. The market area is small and practical. It’s where villagers gather to sell local produce, grains, vegetables, and handmade crafts. You’ll find temples, statues, and shrines, scattered throughout the area, some hidden in quiet corners, others set atop small hills. For example, there is a big statue of Buddha set atop a hill, which can be reached by climbing numerous stairs.
Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, popularly known as Namo Buddha, is located at a distance of about 14 km from Dhulikhel. You can either drive or hike to the monastery. It is a peaceful place, known for its ancient monastery and the story of Buddha’s past life. According to the legend, a long time ago, Prince Siddhartha (who later became the Buddha) saw a starving tiger with her cubs. Out of compassion, he sacrificed his own body to feed the tiger. This act of kindness and selflessness is said to have taken place at Namo Buddha. This story is carved on the walls of the temple's entrance. The area has a big monastery where monks live and meditate. Many visitors come here to pray, meditate, or simply enjoy the serene environment. The peaceful atmosphere, combined with the story of compassion and sacrifice, makes Namo Buddha a special place for both Buddhists and tourists seeking spiritual connection.
In Dhulikhel, there’s little to do by way of planned activities. You can do a few adventure activities, such as paragliding and zip line flying. However, it is more of a place to settle into the rhythms of life around you, to embrace the simplicity of living in the moment or to relax in a luxurious hotel and observe the mountains. In recent years, due to a significant increase in tourists, many luxurious resorts and hotels have opened in and around Dhulikhel. This has further increased the number of tourists visiting this region. People often go to these resorts and hotels for a few days to unwind and enjoy the beauty, peace and luxury they offer.
