Gorkha, Nepal
Gorkha, a small town located just a few hours from Kathmandu, is important not just for the natural and cultural experience, but also for its historical significance. It was here, in the 18th century, that Prithvi Narayan Shah, the founder of modern Nepal, first began his campaign to unify the country. The events of that time seem distant now, but there’s an unmistakable reverence for the town’s role in shaping the nation’s history.
The centerpiece of Gorkha is the Gorkha Durbar, an old palace that stands as a testament to the region’s royal past. However, the Durbar is not one of opulence and grandeur, but rather a simple, stately structure, offering a panoramic view of the lower hills and the distant mountains. The palace itself is a place of quiet dignity, its worn stones and faded wood offering a glimpse into a time when this town was the seat of the Shah dynasty.
The surrounding area of Gorkha is equally unassuming. The town’s streets are lined with modest houses, small shops, and local eateries. People move slowly here, absorbed in their daily tasks, whether it’s tending to small shops, drying grains in the sun, or chatting with neighbors. The people here are mostly farmers, but there’s also a distinct presence of craftspeople who still produce goods in traditional ways—handwoven textiles, pottery, and woodwork are common. The hills are dotted with terraced fields that change color with the seasons—lush green in the monsoon, golden and dry in winter. The occasional stone walls, built by the hands of generations, separate the land into neatly defined sections.
The historical significance of Gorkha is not something that dominates the town’s current atmosphere, but it does linger quietly in the background. Set against a backdrop of rugged terrain, the town doesn’t boast the high-altitude grandeur of Nepal’s more famous destinations, but it carries its own weight—woven into the stories of kings, battles, and the origins of the nation.
