Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve
The Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve, located in eastern Nepal along the Koshi River, is one of Nepal’s most important protected areas, known for its remarkable biodiversity, particularly its birdlife. The reserve is home to a variety of ecosystems, from wetlands and grasslands to forests, making it an excellent destination for nature enthusiasts, bird watchers, and those looking to experience the subtropical landscapes of Nepal. This tour offers a relaxing yet immersive way to explore the reserve’s rich wildlife and serene environment, all while learning about its ecological importance.
You will take a short domestic flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar, a bustling city in eastern Nepal. The flight offers views of the Himalayan foothills and fertile lowlands. From Biratnagar, you’ll drive for about 2 hours to the Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve. The drive takes you through local villages, farms, and along the edge of the Koshi River. Upon arrival, you’ll check in to your lodge or eco-resort, where you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. On the same day, your guide will take you on a short nature walk around the area to familiarize yourself with the reserve’s landscape. The Koshi Tappu is a haven for bird watchers, with over 450 species of birds recorded, including the Siberian crane and purple heron. The walk also offers a chance to spot some animals, like wild boar and spotted deer. The reserve is also home to smaller species like jackals, otters, and a variety of reptiles.
The next day, you will do a full exploration of the reserve, beginning with an early morning boat ride on the Koshi River. The boat ride provides an up-close view of the wetlands and riverbanks, where you’ll encounter both birdlife and aquatic species. After the boat ride, the remainder of the morning will be spent on a guided nature walk through the reserve. Your guide will point out various species of flora and fauna. In the afternoon, you may have the option to visit a nearby Tharu village, where you can interact with the local community and gain insight into the lives of people living in this rural, wetland area.
You can spend the following day exploring more of the reserve, either on foot or by jeep. A jeep safari provides a broader view of the reserve. If you are a birding enthusiast, you may choose to visit specific bird-watching points within the reserve. Alternatively, you can take part in cultural activities within the local communities or visit nearby wetlands and river areas where additional wildlife may be found.
