Dolpa, Nepal
Lower Dolpo offers a more accessible yet equally captivating trekking experience compared to the higher, more isolated regions of Upper Dolpo. This area, which blends both Tibetan Buddhist and Hindu influences, features smaller villages, rolling landscapes, and a way of life that remains deeply connected to the land. Lower Dolpo’s beauty lies in its serene environment, where tradition and modernity coexist in an unhurried and peaceful manner.
On the first day, our staff will receive you at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu and take you to your hotel. You can spend the rest of the day resting or visiting places like Thamel, Boudhanath and Pashupatinath. The next day, you’ll fly to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj is located in the flatlands of the Terai region and serves as a transition from the urban life of Kathmandu to the more rugged and isolated surroundings of Dolpa. From Nepalgunj, a small flight will take you to Jhupal, the entry point to Upper Dolpo. The flight is a stunning introduction to the region, offering panoramic views of the distant Himalayas. As you land in Jhupal, the surrounding mountains start to close in around you, giving you your first glimpse of the dramatic beauty that defines Upper Dolpo.
The trek from Jhupal leads you toward Dunai, the administrative hub of Dolpo. As you pass through small villages, you’ll gain a first-hand look at the simple yet resilient way of life in Dolpo. Dunai itself is a peaceful town, offering a chance to acclimatize to the altitude while learning about the culture of the Dolpali people, who are deeply connected to their Tibetan Buddhist traditions. From Dunai, you’ll pass through various small villages to eventually reach Phoksundo Lake, one of Nepal’s most stunning natural sights. The next day is set aside for exploration of Phoksundo lake and surrounding regions. Situated in a quiet, secluded basin at an altitude of 3611.5 meters, Phoksundo Lake is surrounded by towering peaks and rocky hills, with dashes of greenery, that rise dramatically against the massive sky. The lake is vast, stretching approximately 4 kilometers in length and 1.8 kilometers in width. The lake’s waters are incredibly clear, almost surreal, shimmering in hues of turquoise and sapphire. A few kilometers away from the lake, the water flowing from it turns into a magnificent waterfall of the Suligad river, falling from a height of about 150 meters. The beauty and stillness of the lake will replenish your body and rejuvenate your soul, leaving you fresh and happy, and ready to make your return journey, which will be via a village called Chhepka. Eventually you will trace your steps back to Jhupal, from where you will fly to Nepalgunj and then to Kathmandu.
