Manang, Nepal
The Nar Phu trek is for those who are seeking a more solitary and introspective trekking experience, offering not only stunning natural beauty but a deep cultural immersion far removed from the usual tourist circuits of Nepal. It is a remote and rugged journey that takes you into an untouched corner of the Annapurna region, far from the typical trekking circuits.
After a long drive to Dharapani, you will begin your trek toward Koto. The following day, you will trek to Metha, where the trail winds upward through a mix of forests and terraced farmland. As you ascend, the scenery shifts from lush greenery to more arid, barren landscapes, gradually revealing a stark contrast between the verdant lower regions and the dry, high-altitude terrain further into the valley. Nar Phu Valley itself is marked by its striking landscapes: jagged cliffs, rocky outcrops, and a river that cuts through the narrow valley floor. The villages of Nar and Phu, with their unique Tibetan-style architecture, are deeply steeped in Buddhist culture. You’ll encounter chortens, prayer wheels, and ancient monasteries that still play a central role in the daily lives of the people who live here. The area also boasts a rich diversity of wildlife, including blue sheep, Himalayan tahr, and the elusive snow leopard, although sightings are rare.
Unlike other well-trodden routes in Nepal, the Nar Phu trek feels much more isolated. The higher you climb, the more you’ll notice the absence of the usual crowds of trekkers. Due to its relative remoteness, this trek requires careful planning and a certain level of trekking experience. The trek itself is physically demanding, with significant altitude gain, and the trail traverses a series of high, challenging passes such as the Khang La Pass (5320 meters), which offers sweeping views of distant peaks. Eventually, you will make your way to Pisang, from where you will begin your long drive back to Besisahar and then to Kathmandu.
Note: It is necessary to obtain special permits to enter the Nar Phu Valley, as it lies within a restricted area.
